"Who are some of your influences? I didn’t have many influences, having started performing at a young age and not aware that anyone else was presenting comedy using the hypnosis platform. This helped my presentation style. Instead of emulating someone else’s teachings, I created my stage character from scratch, even though it was always an extension of me. This helped me stand out with unique content and an undeniable persona. However, Johnny Carson, David Copperfield, and the cast of the Carol Burnett Show have influenced my career. Who was your favourite comedian growing up? There were many comedians I looked up to – From Yakov Smirnoff to Steve Martin and Tim Conway. But the one that made the biggest impression was Johnny Carson. I studied everything from his mannerisms to his delivery style. When I was starting out, I spent some time in California, where I attended tapings of the Tonight Show, starring Johnny Carson. This is also where I fell in love with show business."

He just loves to work. All of it is focused on the positives of life, from poverty to wealth, being an unknown hypnotist to Ted talk speaker. Readers will enjoy the anecdotes about famous comedians (Mitch Hedberg and Howie Mandel) as well as the origin story for a very interesting life. "The two-hour show was filled with moments of hypnotic hilarity. The students who joined Cherniak on stage were not behaving as mindless zombies. His techniques are more suggestive than they are forceful, with psychology taking a greater role over 'mind control'. As Boris counted down to one when his performance concluded, his volunteers left their trance-like state, at first only remembering pieces of the performance. He told them to 'let it sink in' that they remembered their antics during the show, and as they remembered, they laughed."
Hypnotist helps with surprise marriage proposal
"Just in case anyone wasn’t convinced of the power of hypnosis, Cherniak told the crowd, he was going to do it once more. He called for a volunteer from the audience, telling him to bring along his girlfriend. Within seconds of taking to the stage, Chow appeared to be in a deep trance, head tilted back, eyes closed, as a collective “Wow” rippled over the audience. Cherniak peppered Kou with questions about why they aren’t married and then ordered the 'hypnotized' Chow to propose, only he wouldn’t be able to pronounce the words. Head lolling, Chow eventually stuttered out a 'will.' Cherniak then pulled out some signs to “help” him, propping up four large placards against the slumbering volunteers still on stage. Someone in the crowd murmured, “Beautiful.” The signs read, “Christine, will you marry me?” She gasped as Chow broke into a wide smile and sank to one knee, ring held out in front of him."

"Born in Moscow, Russia, Cherniak grew up across from the Moscow Circus where he was a regular backstage, learning the tricks of the trade from famous clowns Yury Nikulin and Oleg Popov. As a teenager he read Morey Bernstein’s The Search for Bridey Murphy, a book concerning a true life hypnotic regression that inspired Cherniak to learn everything he could on the subject. What started as a hobby, hypnotizing people at parties, has developed into a 300- plus show a year career, but Cherniak’s emphasis is still on fun. In 2008, he performed at the Women’s Global Leadership Conference in Dubai, last summer he entertained Canadian and American troops as part of Operation Hot in Afghanistan and just recently he performed a corporate show for Google (Cherniak is credited with creating the phrase 'Google me'). How do you handle the ‘nah-sayers’ thinking hypnotists are phoney-baloney? Boris: I take a rather different approach - I don’t. My first priority is to entertain and not to convince. I was a skeptic myself. By being ignorant about something does not make it less real. I spent many years learning and researching. I see myself as someone who gets people introduced to the subjects or makes them think of its validity, rather than trying to convince every skeptic. Keep an open mind - knowledge is power! Is hypnotism a gift, an art form or a scientific formula that anyone can learn? Boris: It is a gift to be on stage with people paying their full attention to the images you create with words and actions. I always had the ability to compel the audience to follow my train of thought. The delivery got smoother with practice. Hypnotism is a learnt behavior. It is a logical outcome to a sequence of commands, which can be verbal, visual or social. Hypnotism is not unquestioned mind control, but a set of directives that is followed according to our beliefs and experiences, which a skilled hypnotist uses to an advantage. It is a wonderful use of language to achieve a specific result. I learnt how to hypnotize – that is a formula, however each formula has to be tweaked to the person or an audience."
